What an Hourly Move Actually Costs in Los Angeles

Every moving company in Los Angeles advertises an hourly rate, and almost nobody explains what actually goes on the clock. That gap is where the bad surprises live. So here is the honest version, using our real numbers.

The rate is per crew, not per mover

Our rates run $119/hr for 2 movers, $159/hr for 3, $199/hr for 4, and $239/hr for 5. That price includes the truck, the dollies, the blankets, the shrink wrap, and the straps. There is no separate truck fee tacked on at the end.

There is a 3-hour minimum. That is not a trick to pad the bill. It is the smallest block of time that makes sense once you count loading, driving across town, and unloading. If your move genuinely takes two hours, you still pay for three, so it is usually worth having the crew break down a bed frame or carry a few extra boxes while they are there.

More movers is often cheaper, not more expensive

People see $239/hr for five movers and flinch. Then they look at the math. A two-bedroom apartment with a flight of stairs might take 2 movers seven hours ($833) or 4 movers four hours ($796). Same job, less of your day gone, and less risk that someone gets tired and clips a doorframe on hour six.

What actually adds hours

• Stairs. Every flight adds real time, and it adds more on the way out than on the way in.
• Long carries. If the truck parks 200 feet from the door, every item takes a walk.
• Elevators with a reservation window. A shared elevator can turn a 4-hour job into 6.
• Packing that is not finished. Half-packed kitchens are the single biggest time killer we see.
• Furniture that has to come apart. Bed frames, sectionals, wall units, and treadmills all take tools and time.
• Freeway timing. Crossing LA at 4pm is not the same trip as crossing it at 10am.

How to cut an hour off your bill

1. 1Have every box taped, labeled, and stacked by the door before the crew arrives.
2. 2Empty dresser drawers of anything heavy or breakable, and leave clothes in them.
3. 3Reserve the elevator and the loading zone in advance, at both ends if you can.
4. 4Disassemble anything you already know how to take apart.
5. 5Keep a clear path from the door to the truck. Move the potted plants and the bikes the night before.
6. 6Book a morning slot. Traffic is lighter and crews are freshest.

The number you should ask for

Ask any company for a written estimate that lists the crew size, the hourly rate, the minimum, and the travel time policy. If they will not put it in writing, that tells you what you need to know. We give you the estimate before the truck is booked, and the quote you get is the price you pay.
