DIY Move vs Hiring Movers in Los Angeles: An Honest Comparison

We are a moving company, so you would expect us to say hire movers every time. We do not. Some moves genuinely do not need us, and we would rather tell you that than take a job you will resent paying for.

The real DIY cost

The $19.95 a day on the side of the van is a rental rate, not a total. Once you add it all up, a small LA DIY move usually lands somewhere between $180 and $400:

  • Van or truck rental, plus mileage at roughly a dollar a mile
  • Gas, and a moving truck does not get good mileage
  • The damage waiver, unless your card genuinely covers rentals
  • Furniture pads, a dolly, straps, and tape
  • Food and gas for whichever friends show up
  • A parking ticket, which in a lot of LA neighborhoods is close to a coin flip

The cost nobody puts in the spreadsheet

A DIY move eats a full day, often two. It also puts the risk on you. If the couch gouges the hallway wall on the way out, that is your deposit. If someone drops the TV, that is your TV. If your friend hurts his back, that is a whole different conversation.

When DIY genuinely makes sense

  • A studio or a single room with no large furniture
  • Ground floor to ground floor, with parking right out front
  • You already own or can borrow a truck
  • You have two people who are actually strong and actually free, not just polite
  • The move is short and your schedule is flexible

When hiring movers pays for itself

  • Any stairs beyond a single short flight
  • A building with an elevator reservation or a certificate of insurance requirement
  • Anything heavy and valuable: a piano, a safe, a marble table, a sectional
  • A hard deadline, like keys due back the same day
  • You are moving with kids, pets, or a job you cannot take a day off from
  • You are over about 1,000 square feet of stuff
The honest midpoint

Load-only help exists. Some people rent the truck and hire a crew for two hours just to load the heavy items properly. It is not for everyone, but it is a real option and it works.

How to decide in two minutes

Count the items you would be nervous carrying down stairs. If that number is more than three, hire movers. If it is zero or one, rent the van and buy your friends dinner. If you are somewhere in between, get a quote and compare it to a real DIY total instead of the rental rate.
